What are First Asia Investor's "Model Portfolios" all about? How do you go about determining which stocks go in each of those portfolios?
We've spent literally thousands of hours of research develop our Model Portfolios. Each portfolio is organized by either an investing objective (aggressive, income, etc) and includes a list of investments that we feel are in the best position to deliver solid long-term gains to their shareholders. We use a proprietary methodology that incorporates fundamental revenue and earnings growth, market share and competition analysis and a host of other factors to come up with our picks, and we also closely monitor each of these stocks 365 days a year.
The markets and other news events are constantly changing. As your investing guide, we consider it our job to keep right on top of all of those changes, filter out the junk, and report only the most important items to you..
How does First Asia Investor determine when to add or remove holdings from a particular portfolio?
There is no great answer to this question, primarily because every situation is unique. However, we can give you a quick overview of our internal stock selection process here.
In general, when adding a investment to our various portfolios we start by using a series of unique filters and other proprietary methodologies. This cuts down the vast investing universe to a much more manageable list of the world's best performing, financially sound investments. Next, we comb through this list and use a variety of fundamental analytical techniques in order to determine which investments are best positioned for short and long-term gains. These investments are usually industry leaders in high-growth markets or have proven track records in the marketplace.
In terms of removing particular investment, there are several reasons why we might decide to do this. For one, events and marketplaces change every single day, and sometimes certain events can change the fundamental outlook for one or more of our portfolio holdings. In other cases, particular holdings sometimes get ahead of themselves, and we then sell due to valuation concerns.
There are a number of good reasons why we might decide to remove a investment from our various portfolios. We always release a News Flash or include some commentary within our newsletters when we remove a particular investment, and that material should give you a more in-depth explanation for that particular decision.
